Rug makers can design an initial pattern for a rug in nearly any medium, from a sketch on a napkin to a photograph, and then transfer the drawing onto graph paper that is the size of the rug. Each grid of the graph paper represents a knot in the rug.

Rugs can be handmade or machine-made. Machine-made rugs are not as well defined as their handmade counterparts, but both styles create magnificent pieces of art.
